Just a note to say that since I wrote 4 days ago, the problem has not come back. I do not see that annoying "Generic host process for win32 services has encountered a problem and needs to close..." message any more. My computer was connected point to point to my laptop. After I use the bat file, I can't open shared folder on my laptop. My computer can ping laptop address & get reply. I did not understand your bat file, but I think it disable my computer to open shared folder. Can you make program to restore the setting? Thx
Jimmy, if you have still in troubles then you might get all things back by restoring your computer. To restore your computer, go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore. Then select the restore point and then restore. You will get your Windows in the previous conditions.

Thanks rancid for the solution coz it has really solved my generic problem but after running the MS-DOS batch file it has disabled the netbios and whenever i try to install the cybercafe pro 3.7 on the server it always tells me to install net bios to register it.
without the bios it runs in trial mode which kips on shutting down after 1 hour.

Hello, was about to try the solution on a server, but i noticed your disabling the Dcom which is a critical service on the server in running, so i had to avoid making the change. Do you have a solution which does not turn of DCom, as this is a critical business server. Also, is this host error something important, or can i simply ignore?

Well, As for me this fix did't work - It seems not enough to make only registry changes.
The reason of this errors can be in corrupted sytem files or incorrect peripheral drivers.
I've tried different solutions - installed Microsoft updates. Ran "sfc scannow" system file recovery using my XP CD. After long search in the web I found solution.

I Have solved the problem of Generic Host Process... By using the method 1 But has now created another problem,I am a client user in my office of a software on the server computer, after runing the bat file i'm not able to access other computers on the Local area Network. Pls. help out !!

Natz, don't worry. There is a workaround if your system restore is turned off. Do the following
1)Back up your registry
2)Go to HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\netbt\parameters\TransportBindName - REG_SZ. The value should be empty.Change it to \device\
3)Go to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\OLE\EnableDCOM- REG_SZ and replace "N" with "Y".
4)Restart your PC and you should be able to connect.
I am now unable to access my shared folder after running this!! My IT guy has tried everything but to no avail, i will try system restore but rancid should have known better, its a mess.
I have tried the JIMJIM process but cannot find the files in my registry. sux!

Workgroup PC's are not shown in the list nor are they accessible through their name or IP Address. Ping to the workgroup PC by name and IP Address is successful.

m facing great problem with this generic host, feel like smashing my pc. i have installed fresh copy of winxpsp2 about 5 times but nothing fixed my problem. i can connect to the internet for about 10 to 15 minutes only.then this generic error window appears n my connection gets lost. cannot re connect to the internet until i restart my pc again . please any help ... thanx in advance.....
This fix looked suspicious from the start. Download strange binaries and run? I would at least put this through a virus scan.
When there's lots of odd-looking, poor-English posts all using the same words praising the fix, it sounds more like a "hard sell" to me.

I had no success with your method, but I did get help from COMBOFIX.EXE available at bleepingcomputers.com. The program also solved another problem ... unable to boot into Safe Mode, though normal mode would boot.
no it didn't work for me.. i tried to turned off system restore run the program then restart my pc but still that annoying popup message appear...it sucks.
i just did method two im hoping to see if it works. if not i will be VERY upset.

First I tell u that the method both told by rancid taste are same. only the difference is in 1st method you have to create batch file yourself while in 2nd method he provide download file. You can also manually change these setting in regedit.exe if you are advanced user.
This method Disable DCOM and TransportBindName value to blank after this you will not able to share network folder. So dont install network resources on this computer if you want to share. But Internet sharing is ok. feel free to contact admin@webfrnd.com for more info.

I had the same issue as Jimmy10 in that after running the bat file access to shared folders ceased to work. I could ping servers on the network. Connect to the internet via proxy and even conduct RDP. Luckily I had backed up my registry as I noticed that your code edits the registry first. However restoring the registry or going back to a restore point means that you just end up with the Generic Host Process Error again. This is good if you are standalone but does not solve the problem if you are not :-(
and yep your solution did not work for me due to the fact that my error has only occured on the internet and your solution (i am guessing) works for people who receive the error 24/7 non-stop

When I checked in this morning, my laptop couldn't connect to any shared folder on my LAN. I scrolled down the remaining messages and found the fix for the network. I did the fix on the registry for netbt and the DCOM entry and I got my LAN access again. Thank you very much for this.

Doesn't work. Disabling NetBT screws up your LAN services. Microsoft solution does not work also. More likely it's a rootkit that Malwarebytes does not catch either. ComboFix is the only thing that fixed it for me. So far.

My parents get a 32win process error message & then a bunch of windows open up like 5 or 6 all w/ "bing" as the home page (thiers is yahoo)I thought it was pop ups but pop up blocker is on ?I have to go 137 miles to fix it.I'm trying to over the phone.I was just up there & trend micro & eveything was fine.Any suggerstions has to be an easy fix 78 & 82 1/2 years old? ComboFix fixed this for me! Had a rootkit on 2 PC's giving me grief for weeks! Malwarebytes and spybot didnt find it. AVG 9 missed it also!

Oh and I did use method 1 to fix one PC and not the other. I lost network shares on the one it did not fix but ComboFix corrected the problem for me and now I can access network shares again after rootkit was removed. Spybot found a few more win32 porn popup cookies after all this, and so many CLEAN scans before rootkit removal!!! USE THIS!!

I was using WinXP SP2
Shortly afterwards I began experiencing connectivity problems, but I think this was down to the Generic Host Process for Win32 error, rather than the BAT File, but I may well be wrong.
I tried the winsockxpfix file mentioned in the comments above, but this did not help
Then I updated my Windows XP to SP3, which I downloaded on a separate computer, from the Microsoft website. This installed without any problems
However, None of this seemed to solve the lack of internet connection
In the end, I began to suspect (having read other blogs and forums) that it was something to do with the 'Windows Zero Configuration' service. I had that set to automatically start on windows boot up. So i set it to 'manual' instead in services
After doing this, I opened up the specific manufacturer's client that handles my wireless PC card/adapter. In this utility, I selected that it should manage the utility (instead of windows)
Then, I went into my 'wireless network connection settings' (via My Computer>My Network Places>Network Connections) by right clicking on the 'wireless network connection' and selecting Properties. On the General Tab, I went to 'Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)' and clicked properties. There, I entered the DNS settings specified by my Broadband service provider on their website support section. I got these through another 'working' computer
Then, this solved the internet connectivity problem. I rebooted the pc a few times and all was well with web browsing at least. If your internet connection does not return at this point try right clicking on the 'Wireless Network Connection' icon and clicking repair. Also try rebooting the computer
However, I was still receiving the same 'Generic Host ...' Error shortly after each windows boot up. But, this time, it did not appear to be disabling my internet connectivity as it was before, so, SOME success
It did change my Start menu and task bar to the 'classic' colours alright each time it came up, so i knew i needed to get rid of it. So That is when I decided to use Combofix which was mentioned in an above comment

I am not recommending that others use this product without supervision though however, as it is a very powerful piece of software and may RUIN your computer
If I was you I would go into one of the forums mentioned on the above page and ask those guys to help you by explaining your problem and seeing what they say
SO, anyway, I ran combofix, having followed all the instructions (its VERY IMPORTANT to follow these). Disabling all anti-spyware and antivirus and firewall software was essential. I had problems running the program first time and I think this was down to my not having disabled windows firewall or AnyDvd. There are other programmes that must be disabled too like daemon tools etc. There are web forums that detail what needs to be disabled
Another point to note is to make sure that you do not download combofix from other websites apart from ones linked to on the web page above in case they are dodgy versions
So, I ran combofix a second time and I think it took about 30 mins to go through fully. I followed the instructions better the second time and it worked. It did its job and restarted my computer. I made sure to just let it run and not do anything other than what I was told to on the printed out instructions
However, new problem! No internet connection again. So I rebooted my computer immediately. This solved that! Happy days.
Now, my connection has gone again once since this and I fixed this by doing a 'repair' (when right clicking on the wireless network connection icon).
I have now been using the computer for almost 2 hours with a couple of reboots and no sign of the 'Generic host process' error. Fingers crossed it does not return
If it does, Ill try to come and tell you guys about it. Hopefully this will be of some help to people
I am going to go and do a Malwarebytes AntiMalware scan now and a few virus scans to have the computer as clean as possible after my recent issues...thats assuming they are virus related and not just some windows glitch (or other program), which they may well have been too
Phew! what a nightmare. Just so you know, this has all taken me almost 4 full days, between reading forums, trying things etc etc. Hopefully you can solve it quicker than I did.....thats IF my problem IS solved

Hey i ran this which removed the error message which was great except now i can't access see any network folders.
Started having a problem a few weeks ago then this annoying Generic Host Process rubbish started coming up a few days ago. Seemed to always come up when we were either on-line, playing games or both. Computer would lock up and would have to restart the computer. Just downloaded this file, rub it and it says that the Generic Host problem has been sorted so i'm hoping that THAT is the end of the annoying Host. Will let you know how it goes.
Back to the drawing board - unfortunately it didn't do anything and I'm still getting the message up.

Downloaded method 2 three times and still get the shut-down and message. This happens on my remote computer that uses my wireless network. The one on the LAN port where the router is located is not affected. When I get the message, access to the wireless is shut down.

I tried Method 1, restarted my computer, and it worked! It fixed many of the problems with my computer that I had no idea had anything to do with it.
Then the next day I go to turn my computer back on, and the error pops up again? One day thing? What's up with that?

fix provided by RT didn't work for me,. "generic host for Win32 services" error started a couple of days ago, while trying to view a downloaded video file for Stalker pc game using Vlc video player v9.8h it seem to me that the file was corrupted somehow and the player tried to played it but it went into comvulsions of some kind it wouldn't close and the pc got very slow the player couldn't release the video file., I got frustated and hit the reset button on the pc., on re-boot I started to get the generic win32 error deal... I started searching in how to fix the problem with out re-installing windows because not-even the (System-Restore) feature worked.
Anyhow, tried just about anything that google search will come-up with on the matter and nothing., there are serveral pages with some kind of fix but still nothing... don't know if it was a combination of all the fixes put together or the last attempts in fixing the problem that finaly did it.
Last three things that I did were downloaded (ComboFix)and ran it, still didn't fix the problem but did manage to re-activate the recovery console (system restore) could use it because didn't have a restore point made., next download and install/run CCleaner v2.19 had this version for a while, next open control panel and turn-off Windows-Auto-Updates then open or click: Start\My Computer\Local Disc (C:)\Windows\ then find the folder named (Software Distribution) and re-named to or add ".old" then back to control panel and run windows updates from there.
In my case I was still running IE7 so, it updated to IE8 and installed some windows updates and on re-boot the system was running fine again finally. I'm not going to say that this will fix everybody's problem but I was at the end of the rope here, was just about to wipe-out windows and do a re-install, using CCleaner is a little dangerous in the a way because you can easily delete files that the system needs. but didn't care in my case an deleted everything that cleaner came out with until it found nothing to delete.
Well, that is it.. I hope that this will benefit somebody out there with this nightmare.

This did not work for me. I found a way to fix the sound file, no problemo. But I continue to keep getting the "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services" window. I have googled so many solutions that it isn't funny. I currently have AVG, CCleaner, and Mal-ware Bytes. AVG has been disabled and won't run. I cannot uninstall the program or re-install....ANY SUGGESTIONS!?!?!

Beware: if you are using your pc in a network sharing the drives....... it will disable the sharing as it closes the port.....
please be sure about the services info before applying .......

I suffered with this irritating issue for months and trawled through so many websites to find a way to get rid of it.......it drove me mad and nothing worked UNTIL i came across someone suggesting I try Hitman Pro 3.5
I downloaded the free version and it picked up all sorted of trojan/rootkit malware issues that so many other AV software programs had missed AND more importantly it deleted pr quarantined the bugs meaning that I now, thank god, touch wood have a PC free from this pain in the @ss virus :-)
I recommend anyone you has this issue to try Hitman Pro. I promise you I am not someone who works for them......just someone who is happy to pass on the good news and help others feel the relief I feel right now :-)

I have been trying to fix a families member computer that has this message and so far nothing. From what I understand, they got the laptop from the boss, it's not to old but of course it's used. They were deleting old files off of it that had to do with the bossmans work and ended up deleting more than what they should have I'm thinking. I tried a system restore but that didn't work and so have tried your Method 1 and when I rebooted the message was still there. I'm at my wits end. Do you know any other fixes that might help?

I tried these, and they didn't work for me. What worked, was HITMAN PRO 3.5.8. It found some malicius files in my computer that other programs didn't, and it really fixed the problem! I was so desperate, I searched like million sites before I found a solution *_*. I normally wouldn't have said anything here, but I just wanted to say that Hitman pro worked, so maybe it works for you too?

I have the same generic host process problem. I went with system 2 and it didn't work. Reading what the one person did to turn off the systme restore it tells me I will lose my update starting points. Is this the right thing to do?

I get the same error message. I'm waiting for your first answer to my question on system restore points. How I get by is when it tells me to send the error message to MS I do that. Then it shows what was sent and to close. I don't close it just stick it in the background and anything works. If I close it I have problems.

I think Method 2 gave me the solution. But after doing that you have to restart your PC. Method 2 is a MS-DOS Batch File. Thank you for your help Sir.

I tried method 2 above and then paretologic PC advisor with no change to speed or error messages. I then uninstalled little used software and drivers (including Minolta film scanner and Canon printer) and the error has gone and speed is restored. I suspect there are many causes for this error message and I was lucky that the simplest worked.

have been having this problem for a while. Tried the 2nd method but the message keeps coming up, also I now have another problem, when I start up the computer all I get is a blank screen without icons or taskbar! To get rid of this I have tried putting in explorer.exe again but nothing happens. I have to do a restore a few times before it goes back to normal. Then that awful message comes up again and back to square 1. Anyone have any ideas about what to do next! Thanks.

s there something that should be done to browse through the LAN after running the fix.
Workgroup & shared drive PC's are not shown in the list nor are they accessible through their name or IP Address. Ping to the workgroup PC by name and IP Address replay is successful.

I have windows server 2003. Suddely due to virus attack it stoped mapping for network. It stopped giving network access to its d drive to all other user.
The message on the server we got is
generic host process for win32 services.

I tried your method two multiple times. The error message is still there. I can't open Google Chrome. I saw in one of the comments, that someone said the error message was due to sound problems. I've got sound problems as of today. No sound at all. When i click on Volume Icon. The message is reading that No active mixer devices are available. What does that mean? How do i get my sound back? Thank's
I've got to say your knowledge saved me a great deal today at work, am going to narrate my story quickly. We use interconnected computers of about 15 computers to 1 server monitored by a timer, unfortunately the server starts compaining of Generic problem which disabled internet activity on all computers except the server. I started doing unrealistic things like repair windows which didn't work, then i went online to solve the problem i saw some methods which didn't work, then i saw yours which worked perfectly. you are the best, Thanks a million

this steps really works generic host process, but we cant access to our local network. only local network internet connection is good. file or printer sharing will be block. if any one have solution for networking sharing repairing system then mail me

Method 2 was short and successful, I applied it on my laptop & restarted the system. I got rid of those annoying messages which was blinking non-stop on my screen i.e."Generic host process for win 32 services"

i did the 2nd method n mashallah things workin good.....but my msgs n blog posts r not viewed in Rich-text format....they r still in text...MS said things will look bak to normal but it isnt....

go to controll panal......windows firewall...advanced.....icmp settings
if “allow incoming echo request”box is checked then clear it
and if not i prefer u should click restore defults…
i try this way and it’s work and the msg is gone

I keep getting the Generic Host PRocess for Win32 services has encountered a problem and needs to close etc.
This happened after i tried to scan a document, wizard froze at 99% complete, restarted several times to no avail still getting the problem and still cant scan.. any ideas or help would be much appreciated. Thanks

This method will fix the annoying error message, but be aware, that if you are using your computer on a network, you will loose all your mapped & shared drives... This is what happen to me, since I have applied the fix on my work computer...

hi, wondered what my problem could be ? every so often we lose the internet we think its something to do with the ip address as when we do a diagnoses it says cant verify ip address, and then cant do a thing, after a few system restores back by 2 months this time we get back the internet, i know this will happen again wondered what could be the cause? kind regards, diane

I did Method 2. The first time it didn't work. Then I turned off my System Restore and did Method 2 again. Since then my PC has been running 24 hrs without that annoying message "Generic host win32....etc." I am keeping my fingers crossed it won't come back again
